Australia (2008)
To be very frank I was expecting the history of Australia in this movie. But I was in for a movie which was not a war movie,no completely romantic,no western,no emotional but a pieces of all crafted and detailed in a clear manner. .I had some feel of watching the movie “out of Africa” for no reason.I couldn’t get correctly why I correlated this movie may be because of the costumes and the faraway downs house which was looking very similar.
Coming from England Sarah Ashley ( Nicole Kidman)reaches Australia who is assisted by Drover(Hugh Jackman) who manages the cattle in Australia .Sarah hears the death of her husband in his Property Farmland Downs.Sarah finds the things which are going in her husband’s property with the loss reported income and she fires manager Fletcher who is incidentally to be the cause for all the mess . Sarah seizes control of the land, much to the dismay of King Carney (Bryan Brown), a rival cattle baron with eyes on purchasing Faraway Downs. She gets close with a kid Nullah (Brandon Walters), a "half-caste" Aboriginal boy trying to avoid governmental detainment of Australia.
Drover and Sarah fell in love and they as a group drive back the cattle to ship overcoming the hindrances of Fletcher and Carney .Australia speaks about the extinct generation of the country and its culture in a manner which is very close to reality. The out look and the presentation gives a underplay but when we sit back and think about this it gives a grand look for the visuals.
Hugh Jackman makes us believe that he has mastered the culture of Australia with his body lanaguage and macho physique. He falls in love with Nicole Kidman in a very manipulative scene and their emotions are tested when there is a difference of opinion about the kid Nullah.Nicole Kidman is comical at times but her character with Drover and the kid Nullah can be enjoyed at many parts.
The difference in the treatment is with some very versatile characters ,especially the kid Nullah and aboriginal Nomad kind George who lives in the topside of hills. He mystifies the movie but it gives a meaning when it ends with a note. Watching the story embark on a blazing cattle drive and final climax scene of unification of Ashley and Drover are sure to be a treat to watch for the viewers.
The one thing which tested my patience is the length of the movie which drove me crazy ,it was 170 mins of lengthy drive. When Drover and Ashley had a life returned at Faraway downs and then when I found WWII indications in Australia I knew the movie is run for another forty five minutes ,You can enjoy this movie with a mind open for a romantic and emotional movie with some good performances.
