The Notebook(2004)

Image
This is my second romantic movie review of the week after before sunset. It was so compelling for me to go on for it .When I was half way through the movie I thought I was deceived by the DVD cover. I am forced to mention this at this instant. Once when I met Madhan ( Hai Madhan Fame ) in Devi Theater for movie Koodal nagar I asked him in the interval “How is the movie” He answered “I cant comment till I completely see this film”I just reminded of that when I was watching “The notebook”.Its always a crime to have preconceived notions about any movie before completing it.With Note book it happened for me .The movie started of great and it faded away in between but it built again and lost it again. You are taken for a good love story through out the movie there is no denial on it .If you just ask me so barely these kind of romantic movies are common considering the first half. But the second part had some thing to touch your senses in a sensational manner. Not so often in a romantic m

Donnie Brasco(1997)

When you see a actor repeatedly in same character you will feel jaded .It so happens with many of the great actors also. Because cinema is about versatility in many senses. Watching Alpacino kind of actors are always treat .That too in a Mafia character is much more than a treat if it is repeated also.I never get tired of watching Alpacino in a mafia character. He not only brings versatility but his language of Mafia elevates him much more than a showman. Donnie Brasco directed by Mike Newell based on the real-life events of Joseph D. Pistone , an FBI agent who infiltered the Bonanno crime family, based in New York City during the '70s.Joe Pistone (Johnny Depp )of FBI Calling himself Donie Brasco enters goodwill cards of Lefty Ruggiero ( Alpacino )who is a mob.One difference it makes from other Alpacino movies as a mob is that this movie is not about Alpacino . It makes lots of sense in making so for this movie. Because it speaks on friendship, family relationships, Inh

Before Sunset(2004)

What if you had a second chance with the one that got away? What would you do on a day if you meet your old love? We can not vouch for a greater enthusiasm, Because much of the words go unspoken. Because it depends on how one ended up the relation. Time is the one healer which will take care of any wounds and partitions. But the moment one meets her the time which was behind would get narrow and one ends up speechless and perplexed about your fate. But heart of hearts there is always an expectation that one will meet her while you are shopping, In meetings or in travel in the future. It’s the same for Jesse Wallace (Ethan Hawke ) who meets Celine (Julie Deply )after nine years in Paris. Since then he had authored a book about his foregone love .The film from the initial takes off after they meet. Do you have any idea or have any predefined questions to be asked to your past lover? Now that after years and changes any body would like to ask why did you leave me ? There are always poles

Best non English movies ?

I was going through some of the movie blogs ,I was surfing Eddie on Film which is an interesting work on movies from reviews to articles. There was listing for Nominees of Non English movies ,I was able to find some of my favourite movies from Cinema Paradiso ,Akira Kurasowas works ,City of God and some other works also.Deserving movies to be celeberated indeed! When I went through the list I was disturbed why there was no movies from India .I felt some movies like Nayagan (Listed in Time Magazine with out ranking ) ,Lagaan for which RogerEbert rated 4 stars , Pather Panchali (Satyajith Rays Masterpiece) could have found its place in some lists. Is the Quality movies in India not being promoted to a broader sense or its getting restricted to International awards.I was thinking this in a different way also of why Indian movies doesnt get a greater acclaim. The answer I got was there are only a 10-15 quality movies in worlds biggest Movie making Industry to name in the category. The truth

Madurai Movie Magic @ Mappilai Vinayagar

Funny it is.Life is the same for all in Madurai after two years. Madurai is always special for me :) .I entered Madurai as a boy and when I left Madurai before two years it had trained me out as a man. Too much of reminiscences. At present I am in Madurai for a so called negotiation meeting with some Annachi Customers .Tire some day it was for me where I had to trek Aruppukottai , Sattur and Virudhunagar at last the funny part was my sales call ended in Madurai and in My hotel. I took a bath and I wanted to go for a movie at a theatre near by I opted for Transformers @ Urumarum Vettayargal .I do not wish for reviewing even a single bit of the movie because More than the movie, watching it in Madurai excited me .I watched the movie in Mappilai Vinayagar which had laid the foundation and interest in Hollywood movies for many persons like me who graduated in and around Madurai . I remember the days of my Engineering and MBA where we had allotted some special time for Mappilai Vinay

The color of Paradise- (Persian)(1999)

Image
I remember a presentation we did in our college days about Arvind Eye hospital for which our team members decided to switch off the auditoriums light before starting the presentation. The inspiration was to give the feel of being blind, It worked out well. But I often used to imagine how the world looks for me when I close my eyes.I can take a manipulation of what’s happening around because I had been living with vision till that moment. But for Mohamed ( Mohasen Ramezzani ) life is in the darker shades from his birth. All he hears is sound of the birds ,feel of the things going around in which he searches God. How often you come across a movie with mood just traveling across the characters.Color of Paradise is about unsighted kid .Film opens with Mohamed waiting for his father ( Hossein Mahjoub ) to take him back to his village for his holidays. His father arrives late and he is reluctant in taking him back home also. He returns home and enjoys with his sisters and Old Granny. His f

Casablanca (1942)

World has moved far away from World war .Its been sixty years.Humanity is a different word today as it was on a different shape yesterday.Love is different today,But Pain of Love is still the same .Love strucks hard with the hardest man also.More the pain in love, more emptiness in this world .Loss of love makes one feel isolated and gives the feeling of emptiness in and around you. Emptiness makes a human apathetic in what ever activities he had carried before. He lives in the own world. The human relationship, rituals and red tapism becomes big jest .Revolving around the memories makes a man tired and tiredness always gives frustration and frustration leads to loneliness. Casablanca portrays a man Richard “Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) is one lonely, sardonic person living in his own world in Casablanca running a parlor (Recreation Club). If you ask me which is the unsurpassed English movie of all time Hands down I would say its Casablanca. Not for its status ,not for the performance b

Celeberate India ....!

Chak De India (2007)

Image
Rating : 8.9/10 Last time I whistled in the theatre was for the movie Shivaji and the one before it was for Chandra mukhi .I don’t remember any Indian movie had entertained me with such a spirit and feel of India in the recent past. Chak de India has created magic in its own terms and it rocks for 150 mins .I had lots of things to do on a Sunday afternoon ,but I took my friend also with to watch this movie paying 150 per ticket on black counter. But from the word go I never felt for what I paid. Join hands to celeberate the movie which tells about the sport which we dont play and still our national game. The game of real heroes of past. This movie is a real tribute to the national sport of India in its own way. As I had written previously in the blog ( Can Chak de India recreate the magic Dt : 27/7/07) Chak de India is a genuine daring attempt to make a movie on Women’s Indian hockey team ."Hockey"-When was the word last pronounced? May be when India was with star pla

Pallikoodam (2007)

The best part of any body’s life would be the school life.We never knew whats is the real life before us when we were in school.Innocent and fresh that it makes gives the real shape to your life.School becomes one’s part of personification and definition for his life to come.Pallikoodam is an attempt to bring the memories of school life and bind together with the present day changes. But Pallikoodam miserably fails to bring any of the emotions in the way its presented. The movie is inspired by Thangar's novel Kalavadiya Pozhudhugal. It is about a school that is on the verge of shut down.Kumarasamy (Thangar Bachan) and Kokila(Sneha) plans to re unite the old students to support the school.Fate brings old friends Vetrivel(Naren) an IAS officer and Muthu (Seeman) a director to the school who are also the old students. How and when the oldies brings the joy in the school is Pallikoodam for you. Director and Cinematographer ThangarBachan has not come out of the hangover of Azhagi.Director

Mystic river (2003)

Image
Its been so long in my line up that I watched a good thriller .I wanted to have a real stylish thriller for my Sunday night. Mystic river had the real bunch of people whom I love Kevin Becon and Sean Penn .But the movie gave me a experience of watching a movie on ache of guilt rather a thriller. The movie is about a investigation carried out on a murder of Nineteen years old girl . Mystic river has got a capricious and unexpected murderer of the Murder which will not be in our notes of manipulation. But when you end up knowing who is the murderer it lets you with least shock for a movie which had been carried out by some beautiful screen play and dialogues. But I would say the investigation part is awe-inspiring and I can see some Regional movies also taking so bits and pieces of the same. Movie starts with Sean Devine , Jimmy Markum , and Dave Boyle, playing hockey in the street when Dev Boyle is taken by dummy Cop for some spoiling public property. He is molested by them and Dave mana

The Deer Hunter (1978)

Image
Must watch You can hardly find a three hour long English movie. Its so long that it takes time to settle to what it is intended towards. The deer Hunter is one of the emotional and scintillating record of effects of war to a common man.The movie goes as three stages. The first stage inPenisylavania with some Russians celebrating partying after their hard days work. There is a long marriage party which sings along its way and the friends go for hunting deer .Three among the group had to be in Vietnam war after the Hunt.Till the second stage in Vietnam I was thinking there is some thing in the story based on hunting. The second stage spreads around so brutally and in a savage manner which rips you out of the first one hour. Michael "Mike" Vronsky (Robert De Niero ), Nikonar "Nick" Chevotarevich (Christopher walken ),Steven Pushkov (John savage) gets trapped in the Vietnam extremists and been forced to play Russian roulette against each other for the gambling amusement
