The Pianist(2002)

When I watched this movie I was stunned the way it had engulfed the lives and emotions of Jews in Poland. When I went through the web I found the film had a personal connection for director Roman Polanski, as he had himself escaped from the Krakow Ghetto as a child, and had lost his parents there. One greatest thing of this movie differing from other similar movies was it never made the viewers to sit and admire or adore only the Pianist skills. The director was very sure The hero is a great pianist and he never wanted to waste any clips to get claps for Adrian Broody. To be very precise its very difficult to have the command on the character when your roll is passive and when you are running for life. But Broody had done it with the character Wladyslaw Szpilman. This movie won him the Academy award including the two other Oscars for Director and adapted screen play.
Movie is about how a Jewish Pianist living in Warsaw ,Poland during IInd world war survives from Nazi forces till Russians enter Poland driving Nazists. He loses his family he loses his friends and what not he loses every thing. He hides ,runs, holds his life for survival. Finally survives .
There are many scenes in the movie which can make you feel the pain and Hunger .I haven’t watched any Nazi movie other than Schiendlers List. This movie requires shear peaceful environment to watch, If you watch it so you will enjoy the background score which will melt you down against the horrifying and worse conditions of the movie shots. The movie shows how the Jews were thrown, treated, killed ,Squeezed; but it did not fail to show the humanity which existed in that period .Szpilman helped by the Polish couple and the Polish extermists helping Andy are some of the instances.
There are many istances which had to be mentioned where you will know how life was ,to name a few when a woman cries at the Jew camp "Why did I do that "for killing her child when she was trying to make the child stop crying, Scene when a kid enters through hole and gets killed from the other side of the wall .
Survival of the fittest will not fit in this movie. This is Survival from the ruthless and Holocaust .
The Nazizt were brutal and hardnosed cranks in this movie to show the pain of lead role. This movie has hardly any conversations but that does not leave you with unwelcome attention and dullness.Andy's body language speaks it all for you .The whole story is about the state of being of the pianist in tough and worse conditions ,so it revolves around his thin frame of reach. He cries inside for hunger and he virtually plays his instrument in the air when he doesnt have the instrument to play. That scene shows you the love he had for Piano. When you feel its all over you got the real strike that is when Andy is looking for a tool for opening a can(When he searches for food in the demolished houses ), he realizes he is actually being watched from behind by a uniformed German. The German asks Andy to play the Piano when he finds him a Pianist.
In a moving scene he lets Andy to hide and helps him with food.
In the previous script I failed to mention the following points .Thanks to Mr.Pramoth who gave a right way to look at this movie.
He Plays the Piano infront of the German which shows the great pianist once he was, melts the Nazi Soldier.A beautiful scene which shows what the movie is made for.It shows music can break boundries and even break rocks .He starts playing with his fingers bracing on the piano ,his shoulders shaggering and his eyes closed but showing the emotions of Love, pain, hunger, humanity& longing for peaceand life .He plays and plays the piece of his life time not knowing that is saving his life when he nothing to live for.He lets you with lots of emotions giving Broody a life time character .
The Scene shows one more Nazi standing outside the Demolished building hearing to his music and with the back ground of Gunshot fires. The Nazis leave him unkilled and allows him to hide . History writes back and The same German officer is captured by Russians pleads for help when Andy’s friend meets the troop
The music of this movie is something soulful and you need not be a great expert in music to enjoy. He plays the Beethoven' s orchestra to the Nazi .This movie is also a tribut to Polish artist with the movie beginning and ending with Chopins orchestra.
You can read about Chopins Orchestra in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chopin.
You can not make such a realistic movie unless you experience it .That’s why experience plays in Pianist more than Study.
