Varanam Ayiram (2008)
Varanam Ayiram is straight from heart and not from mind .When you have something to say from your heart you are least bothered about the intelligence and you have to abide by your heart. Some how this high expectation on this movie would let down the movie from being a usual Gautham Menon movie. But truly I respect the intentions of the director to bring out a movie which wants to pay the tribute to his passed “ Daddy “ . But some where the intention of the movie is getting lost .
This is the journey of a man Surya from his childhood boy to a ambitious young man through many phases who was guided by his father Krishnan. The young boy Surya takes inspiration from his Dad and he faces ups and downs in life .He is guided by his dad in all his phases and His Dad remains as his one source of motivation through out.He looses his love Meghala and puts a halt for his life with drugs. He gets rehabilitated and turns a inspiring Military officer and meets Priya .
The movie carries a grim mood through out which makes every body to react for it.It is a emotional movie and there are some very touching scenes which you don’t see it often in a father and son relationship. The movie has a lots of cultured people around and the director wanted to show that with their language because most of the time they converse in English.I don’t want to say it as a unusual style but I am confused how a couple(Surya and Simran ) who were conversing in Tamil in their college days all of a sudden after marriage started conversing in English though they claim that they were living with poverty all along. Some times you see a big logical flaw in the time they have created. They show Kamal’s Sathya release in a theatre when Surya is in school which is actually 1988 when he is roughly 18yrs ,and Ayirathil Oruvan release which is actually 1964 during Father Surya’s college days and in the present day Simran should have been in 70’s if my maths is correct but she looks like 50’s woman.Come on People watch the period of the movie so close if you try to show it as a special thing.
The movie is for Surya and its custom made for him ,I couldn’t take off the eyes from him and I could only see how he stands enormously when comparing with his previous movies. He astonishes with every stage of his life. And some times that has created some problems also.We are shown sometimes with young Surya and Matured Surya during College days which is actually lacking with continuity. If you asked me Father character should have been played by some other actor other than Surya.Because we get the feel of Suryamania every where in the movie like Dasavatharam though its only two roles.Sameera Reddy swept the heart for some time with her smile though she is not a great actress her character was likeable.Simran with a intense role and Ramya with a very serious role had done their part.Songs from Haris Jeyaraj and Lyrics from Thamarai has worked magic in the movie.
That was about the movie ,now to the director.Mr.Gautham has a good voice, accepted and people are aware of his voice but it doesn’t mean his voice has to appear in many parts of movie for different characters and in some parts Surya sings in Gautham’s voice. It looks rubbish actually. He wanted a difference to portray his emotions which has actually sacrificed the pace. But it is needed for the audience to observe what he is trying to say.He never gave moments of joy as it was all emotional journey except Surya and Sameera love which was very short lived. The narration of the movie is really disturbing and it hasn’t worked for the movie though it might work as a book.I didn’t get the feel of watching a movie for the first forty five minutes as it was shown in bits and pieces with out sticking to any style. It never left the audience with any expectations as the story was very much exposed in the beginning. But I could see Gautham taking some inspiration from his real life instances which were very close to reality.Good portrayal of a caring and inspiring Dad.The magic of his dialogues has lost its flavour. He lost his belief in Tamil I believe.
If you ask me this is one movie which Gautham has tried of his own of not taking any cut ,copy works from Hollywood which is left to the audience to rate his skill. Its a emoting movie but with many many flaws and snail pace which is actually making difficult to stay for three hours.Varanam Ayiram is touching for the intentions but disappointing as a movie.
Rating : ** 1/2

Thanks man..it was a hyped movie and there was big names involved so wanted to give a good analysed review...So took time...Good to hear it reached ...thanks dude
Its been eight hours that i watched this movie,But still it lingers...a different feeling .I would surely say this movie is different.but it needed some overall emotion rather sticking to one emotion of being grim and dull...Some how the screenplay style and narration didnt work
Waiting for ur comments ....:) i know we all liked his Minnale....:)
Welcome.
U slept? It was dragging in the second half and the child hijack was some thing unnecessary i guess..
but as of my opinion , it was nod a bad movie , wonderful picturisation hats off to goutham and rathnavelu..
am not too bothered about the length since emotional things cant be trimmed easily ,,
my concern is goutham forgotten that TAMIL is the best language to emote feelings and people do also realise it correctly ..
probably he thinks in english thats the problem ..
as for as ur review i expected more good words abt the work. i do agree this is not an extra-ordianary but not ordianry tooo..
I think surya's frequent dialogue in english "Daddy love u etc.." could have been in tamil.i didnt feel that emotional.
Thanks mate.It was like seeing Surya every where and in every corner and we forget the emotions ,end of the film...Thanks for ur visit and comment
Have u reviewed Dostana
i am yet watch that movie but want to know the review first
I havent watched Dostana,As I was personally held up during this weekend and thisweek completely..So all the posts which will be only scheduled posts which i had written previously.
As far as the grapevine reviews from my friends it was ok for humour and good collection of costumes and very good lookin people ...U can watch it very well :)))
I didnt sleep actually but my friends slept...I felt lonely in the second half watching a heavy story..which actually was nt.
Surya is having a rocking period..some how i feel we are getting too much of him and not getting the usual stuffs from him...Harris is magical here...
Would agree with most of the points stated. Would like to add something.
People could infer this title "Vaaranam aayiram" only in 2 sense.
1. "1000 elephants" - the literal meaning of the title or
2. The song "Vaaranam Aayiram Pudai Soozha - Naarana nambi" sung by Aandal (one of the alwars) - This song is related to aandal dreaming about her maariage with all 1000 elephants and great rituals around).
I felt that when all were trying hard to relate the title "Vaaranam aayiram" to the 1st option i.e., "1000 elephants" by thinking the different phases that the hero walks through his life (may be lot of dimensions like the school days, drug addict, military dayss etc) - in the climax - Simran ends the movie by stating that the Father Suriya came with all those rituals to marry her and so was the son for Divya - which could not be related - and we started thinking again - the title does not relate to any of the above options
Giving only **1/2 is Very bad karthik. I enjoyed V1000 very much. First half was fabulous. I accept 2nd half was very slow, but still i enjoyed. After a long time i saw people applauding the director at the end when his name was screened in the theatre. Its surely a directors victory. Your review for V1000 was quite disappointing to me. I am planning to watch again with Arvind and Viswa. U too can join with us man.
Welcome to the space.
u have started a good discussion ! Let me tell u the title goes by the second option which is ayiram padai suzha.
but i think u have taken the meaning in a different aspect. The movie implies the strength security, comfort the character Surya gets from His father krishna is as equal to being 1000 elephants. His father gave him the strength of 1000 elephants.Thats what it was aimed at.Last scene when Simran says about this she takes with the another set of explanation which is also related to the above said one...
Ur views?
Thanks for visiting...
i would love to join with u guys..But after a month only..because no movies in the month of november.
since because a director got applause he can not keep on make applauding movies man...What do u say Kottee...He had given good movies like Minnale and kakha kakha but its sad to see him helpless with the plot in Varanam ayiram and his dialogues being so low quality.
Surya has done an extraordinary job! i too was "just swept off my feet" ;)
as you said, the english dialogs are irritating..
but as a whole i would love to watch the film once again da..
Was waiting for ur reply.I know u would like the movie as it was different in many ways. But i didnt feel the urge to watch it once again...Probably i may watch
Even i was feeling bad to give 2.5 but it deserves only that i feel.As i have said movie has lost its magic right from the beginning..too much of flaws and less justifications ...and emotions also...:(
But I guess "I Love U Daaadddyyy" - would have been a more apt title. Infact the title of the movie in telugu "Surya Son of Krishnan" is more appropriate - isn't it?
Thanks - anyways!!
U can differ, but its the meaning of the title..But I love you daddy was a great title :)))))
Good to see u in my blog....Watch this movie..this rating is given on my disappointment...u should watch it for sure
