Nepali (2008)

Now a days there is strong drive for the directors and the actors to be different in what they pack as a film .V.Z .Durai the maker of Mugavari and Thotti Jeya has come up in a different way but fails to clearly show what he had in his mind.12B was one beautiful Tamil movie which got messed up in the middle with the nonlinear presentation.It needs lots of work on the screenplay to make the viewers comfortable with the nonlinear stories.

There are three Bharaths in the movie but it narrows down to one in the end.The movie goes in three plots with a Nepali who is a serial Killer .He leaves clues to the Cops with like the Killer Zodiac.Karthik(Bharath) who is a software Engineer who romances with Priya (Meera Jasmine ) and he marries her when she flees from her home Ooty.The next part is a prisoner who attempts to suicide but fails every time.He finds comfort with a Old Nepali who is being troubled by the Cops for a specific reason.Now the three plots were shown as if they were not related.Its not like Babel or 21 Grams but this has some thing different.The three characters have some thing in common and it really had kept the secret till the end.It would be unfair if I spell out the knot.The three plots were shown in different time slots which we realize in the later part.

Nepali is good try for some reasons and it sadly fails to impress for some reasons.The wrong reasons had taken a bigger appearance.First and foremost thing is it didn’t copy any thing from the Hollywood flicks except for a few scenes from Zodiac .Secondly the nonlinearity in the story was handled in a pretty descent manner with out confusing but it was not interesting and intelligent enough.Third commitment and confidence from Bharath was stupendous as he has given a splendid performance. But the negative part is Editing .Editing was confusing as it had some unwanted romance scenes in the beginning so lengthy and the scenes with the cops could have been better.

Apart from Bharath there is no noteworthy performance ,even from Meera Jasmine who usually steals the show.The other characters have failed to impress with their chases and performance.The murder methodology is less interesting .And there is a lot of artificial body language with the Cops team headed by Prem.Why the hell all the police officers are wearing a tight armed Shirts –To show off their workouts .It looks funny.The investigation is shown as though they were struggling to locate the Killer but they crack all the clue very easily!!!The old nepali in the prison gives a time frame to the Cop which contradicts to the whole nonlinearity.Srikanth Deva’s music is also confused in the BGM as it remembers many old works.The climax is a one piece of intelligent scene when Bharath runs out of the subway.

It could have been a very interesting thriller if these things were set right ,The dialogues were horrible and the script has lost its way from the beginning due to the precedence given to the romance.Nepali can not be kept aside as a Bad movie ,it’s a good attempt but the attempt to become a Quentin Tarantino has become uninteresting because the charm and the intelligence is missing.I would not say Nepali as a Non linear story but its a unsequential movie with Time and space running with different graphs for the characters.Every body can make a nonlinear stories but it’s the intelligence of some creators makes it a memorable work.Nepali would fail as a movie which is confusing and The director would conclude Tamil audience are not so set to watch a intelligent script.
