Bommalattam (2008)

To my surprise there were no movie halls in Chennai which showed Bommalattam 4 shows .All the halls showed only morning shows or the afternoon shows which was very difficult for me to make it at the first two weeks. Some how I managed this Saturday at Satyam .People said Bharathiraja is back with Bommalattam. He is one of the undisputed legend of Tamil Cinema and when some promos about this movie came I wasn’t much interested as I felt both Bharathiraja and K.B had lost their midas touch .Bommalattam could have been a landmark movie if some of the things were looked with different trend.Bommalattam proves why Bharathiraja is a legend in movie making. And Bommalattam is about The man NanaPatekar and its him who had given the undeniable power till the end.

Bommallattam is about Successful movie Director Rana ( Nanapatekar) who is suspected by Cops for death of new comer Krishna who incidentally plays the heroine in Rana’s movie.CBI officer interrogates Rana and seeks explanation for the murders which happened in Rana’s shooting spot previously.Things when dug deep becomes a shocker for everybody and for us also.We are thrown with lots of manipulations which are proved wrong with a solid twist which lifts every body.

NanaPatekar is a great actor and when he performs we can not find him acting on the screen,it looks so real and we can not follow his pace and tick to the precision which he follows. The characters which chooses also are of that genre.Bharathiraja when signed Nanapatekar I was worried that he shouldn’t get any dumb character. But the character of Rana in the voice of Nizhalgal ravi shows he is a versatile actor of our generation. His angry and demanding glance terrifies ,we can not take this body language as a very normal for this character as this gives lots of guess work about this movie itself. But sadly when we find that we have been deceived intentionally we feel the greatness of the whole plot along with the character. An unmissable role in the recent past for the unpredictable ,eccentric and intense performance of Nanapatekar.

Arjun has played the character of Vikram with a composed and cool manner and he takes the role to dig on the reasons behind the murder. He is also helpless when his girlfriend Anitha moves close with Director Rana .In a moment where his girlfriend doubts about his actions agains Rana he is forced to spell out the truth about the whole murder to her.

The movie has a intelligent way of diverting the audience and it had struck to the typical thriller genre which has worked in a good manner. The plot never loses its track with cheap commercial formula and it has tried to maintain the momentum till the end which gives the viewers to read the character Rana in a manner.I would say Bharathiraja has given the Tamil Viewers to watch how great Nanapatekar’s acting is.The defined and clear characterisation from Bharathiraja about Rana gives the success of the story.Bharathiraja gives the push to the plot with timely twists and it also gives the interest about the movie apart from Nanapatekar.

One thing which fails miserably is Himesh Reshmaiya’s music. It was jarring with some atrocious tune to describe some important moments in the movie. The other factor is the cast in some parts of the movie could have been better.Movie lays down in pride and showoff. It gives a quiet outlook when we take away Nanapatekar. What it needs is a good marketing .Better late than never as it’s a impressive movie made by the legend after years.I would say after Kizhakku Chimaiyiley. If you miss this, its your loss.

Review : *** 1/2

Dei mama....had a lot of expectations, somehow managed to shell out time for this movie last nite...
BUT was really not able to watch it beyond the first 15 mins...the screenplay and direction are highly silly. I'm not sure whether i have seen the final version of the film or i just got hold of the initial cut...Really! Let me try and watch it today...
