Delhi 6 (2009)

One thing for sure that I have learnt from the past years of movie watching is don’t manipulate any thing. When I went for Delhi 6 it was the same.I tried manipulating the movie before even watching it.Some times I feel I am getting over aggressive on movies which creates hype.Delhi 6 is a movie from the heart of Rakesh Omprakash Mehra. He had ambitiously made the lives around Delhi in the movie ,which is more of an characters than the story.

Roshan(Abishek Bacchan ) a half Muslim Half Hindu NRI who brings his dying grandmother to Delhi to spend her rest of her life in the place which she left years ago.Roshan quickly finds himself along with new friends and new relatives in Delhi.Director has made numerous characters whom he had been with for years to bring out the culture and heritage of Delhi. The part of Delhi is horrified by rumours of Kala Bandhar ( Black Monkey ) which creates trouble and its invisible also.Hindu Muslim conflict arises due to the Monkey chapter and Roshan gets trapped in this when he tries to save Bittu ( Sonam Kapoor ) whom he loves .

Delhi 6 is about the life of Delhi,We are less aware of the life and characters of capital city.” Yeh Sehar nahi hain,Yeh Mehfil hain !( Its not a city it’s a party )” is the right word for the city .There are brothers who don’t see eye to eye but their family live through the loose bricks ,there is a arrogant cop, there is a servant who is being tortured since he is innocent,There is a lord who lives in the memory of his lover and there is a young girl who aspires to become Indian Idol. And all are happening in the movie. We are presented with a variety of characters with fun and life.Nothing till the first parts crosses reality and it touches your heart in a manner. The life of an NRI is shown with such a manner which will not make you judge about his character. Is he struggling or is he on a vacation or on commitment ? You can not take his character where its heading towards …Sadly we are not able to find it till the end also.

Ravishing thing about the movie is Sonam Kapoor who is fresh and beautiful like a flower ,Her acting skills are far better than the present day actress I would say.She has a very less screen presence but an impressive presence.Abishek has moved along the movie,He had not strained nor he had acted so casually and I would say its not impressive also.I think it so happened that he is the lead actor. Some thing is seriously missing in this role, which had failed to bring the magic to bind the characters together.Waheeda Rahman is a magical beauty for years and at seventy she is amazing!

Songs speak for the movie,Masakali and Gendha Pol are my personal favourite and it looks amazing on screen too.The amazing music makes you to sit along the characters .Mola mere is one another trademark music of ARR. Binod Pradhan's cinematography brings chandni chowk before you.

The movie on the whole is disappointing for many reasons.First the rumours about the Kala Bhandhar is shown repeatedly which irritates you.The confrontation of Muslim and Hindhus takes a turn on the lightness of the movie and it ends up in a very cheap climax. It so happens the climax with preaching reminds of Rang de Basandi. When the characters unite together we don’t find a genuine reason and it has no justification what so ever why was it ended.

Delhi 6 moves in snail pace as it takes time to settle but when it settles the director has nothing to offer ,he switches to usual Hindu Muslim conflicts.I wasn’t impressed by the plot as a whole. The characters remain in you but not the movie as a whole. In bits and pieces its impressive. On the whole it’s an average movie with an message which is conveyed out of compulsion !
