Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu (2009)


Come to think of it, expectations from a sports movie are not that high. It's usually about the village guy journey from obscurity and failure to being recognised, appreciated and feted. It all ends in a nailbiting climax.Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu follows the same premise but this time its about a team as a whole .

Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu is set in a village near Pazhani where the kabadi team which is ambitious and daring but they are far off from Victory always.Mari who is a farm servant also mingles with the team but doesn’t get the place in the team.Mari falls in love with a Girl who comes to watch Festival in the village.They love each other but get separated as the girl has to leave the village after the festival.Mari decides to wait for her.Meanwhile the Mari gets in to the Kabadi team and the team by luck participates in state level tournament due to help of Proffessional coach Kishore.How things turn up for the team and how the girl reaches Mari is the rest of the movie.

Its good to see a movie on the ethnic sport of Tamil Nadu,Kabadi is in the blood of the Village people of Tamil Nadu and the feel of the winning moments of Kabadi is well brought up by the director Sushidharan.Kabadi is regarded as a masculine art than a sport in this part of the world needs fresh faces and its well assembled in the movie.Movie works in a way for the fresh faces they had brought in. Void of heroism Tamil film is pleasant to watch .

Some times we get the boredom of the Madurai side story and the same typical love story .I don’t know how much love story does Madurai still have? Some parts of the movie looks normal due to normal scenes in the first part of the movie.It didn’t work I would say.The scenes shot in Pazhani should have even more sharper and funny than it is.Director had missed a super hit because of this.

Kishore had delivered a splendid display of maturity as the coach with rustic and stern coach .His dialogues blended with Tirunelveli slang is enjoyable.Vishnu as Marimuthu is good to watch.There are characters who can make fun with their typical village humour.

What works in this movie is the execution of the plot.It never wanted to go overboard and it didn’t want to cross the limits of the underdog.It underplays and it had given intensity to the movie,thrilling climax and the climax looks believable.But the climax is something which we wont expect in these kind of movie and it ends like a sad poetry.

Every one growing up watching Rajini, Kamal would definitely agree; Aboorva sagotharargal, Batsha, Kadhalukku mariyathai or many to name it.  It may be completely not possible today with the schedule and the amount of new content which streams before you. Some movies bring nostalgic moments when they are telecasted today. For example, I usually have it with Bombay, I remember watching it atleast 30-40 times in theatres in and around Tirunelveli. I have rehashed some of Tamil movies which is available in Youtube today which you should watch it again.  These were some of the movies which gave huge inspirations to film makers, script writers or be it any one loves cinema like me. Test it , first 15 minutes of any these movies and I bet you will sure complete the whole movie. With Silambattam Simbu needs a hit badly and he does what he knows the best.Dance and Action. Anantha Thandavam -The original Pirivom Sandhippom

Below is the write up about a movie which I expect so much for this year.The story has been my personal favorite and is based on one of the best Tamil novel which I have read so far.I happened to read the novel Pirivom Santhippom during my college days ,which made me to think aloud about love.Written by Sujatha the story was initially published in Anantha Vikatan in early 80’s.The story of Pirivom Santhippom is of two series first in Tirunelveli second part in America.After eight years I am able to recall each and every characters of the work.This has nothing to do with my memory but with the beauty of the book.The main characters are “Ragupathi and Madumitha “.After reading the book I felt there can not be a sweeter name than Madumitha .Even the name of the particular character while reading the novel will make you feel for Ragupathy.
