Kaala (2018)

Lots have changed after Kabali. Kaala comes amidst tensed  political interviews. But some how this draws a line why Rajini kanth can be mass crowd puller when it comes to movies even in a strongly content driven movie. If you have strong opinion about Rajinikanth as a person don’t waste your time in making a meme, because Kaala has different intentions.

For those who are speaking against Rajini for all the stunts and interview, Kaala is totally a Pa. Ranjith movie. Ranjith is lucky enough to bring Rajini again in his themed movie, I would take a diversion from his thought to bring this thought from a movie stand point and why this movie mattered a great from performance and script.  Kaala is a big movie, for its performances, characters and thought;  but it has humbled  itself in writing and  stereotyping of multitude scenes. Ranjith has problems in delivering powerful dialogues, does his stage interviews or anger convert as verbiage? Absolutely no, he has been writing very mediocre dialogues, even in a very meaningful scenes.

Why does Kaala’s first half crawls even there are more than 20 characters in first 15 minutes of the movie, May be because Ranjith is finding difficult to bring to words of what he shows as deep and meaningful characters. These are people who can make a riot through their dialogues. Remember “En Uyir Thozhan”, one of Bharathiraja’s best written movie and for his powerful characters. Kaala should have been of that standard. Ranjith is becoming unique in bringing characters who all have a story behind them.  Every one speaks absolutely fantastic Tirunelveli dialect – The best is when Huma Quereshi says “ Pathamadai bhai veedu “.

Realism is still larger than life for Rajini in movies and he relentlessly brings to show why he has established himself as a savior of Tharavi in Kaala. Kaala puts meaningful plot to handle the oppression of class by power and land. Land is a birth right and land has an identity towards a culture and tries to bring the pain of how the recent native people protest in Tamil Nadu for land and identity.

Kaala is not only for Super stardom but again once more for his performance and his participation in a way to contribute to an inevitable intention. This is a mighty character unlike Kabali and  this movie brings even intense screen conflicts and confrontations against his real life. For all reasons said and discussed, it takes immense guts to trade again with a second outing and war for a same intention. It’s a typical Rajini thing . Period !!!

You bring controversies, his confused interviews, inconclusive political stands - Rajini is still and will be  the strongest force in Tamil cinema and he still can deliver what his creator wants and steal the show. And out of all make you happy.  One sequence at Police station throws out decades and decades of his onscreen images and proves why is a mighty warrior on screen. Movie can controversially question his intention but that’s how Ranjith movie is made of. For all the suppressed and identity crisis, A need for Rajini has brought a prominence in what Ranjith wanted to convey.

There are two great choices in Kaala -  Nana Patekar and Huma Quereshi. I would blindly go for a movie if its for both actors and hardly they make wrong choices. Nana patekar is a legend is eroding your sense through his words and how easily he brings back the Agni Sakshi days when he counters with Rajini.

I am finding difficult to come out of Zareena’s Kannamma song even though I find a strong influence of Mayanadhi. Sa Na has totally surmounted the scenes with his BGM and every string has brought a meaning to Ranjith’s creation. This pair is inseparable and kudos on the special focus on BGM than on the songs.

Kaala is not only a fight for land but a movie which stands out different from Rajini movie even though it has stunt and mass elements. I still find surprised to see the man's commitment as   an actor for a movie made on bigger intentions which is totally disproportionate to his super stardom . This is a hard way to trade; With an element of satire and bigger social message. I would not hesitate make way for the grandeur Kaala even it conflicts with his political stand.

Kaala is definitely the powerful color !!
