2.0 (2018) ****

Twenty minutes in to the movie and you don’t see the swag or any mass scenes. You aren’t waiting for superstar surprisingly nor his mass scenes, instead you are hijaked to a different elation from the man who made us believe  Tamil movies can be bigger and can bring grandeur to any audience. There used to be days when the first day Shankar movie watching had numerous sub stories in the theater halls and tea stall reviews. Explanation of mammoth production value, flashbacks, social message, Star value what not. Put every thing together you get 2.0 in an uniquely awestruck world which is built by this Director. If this man can make this well conceived marvel with 500 Crores, You are made to nod that he is here to make bigger movies in his style.

2.Point 0 is not a Rajini movie, but an impossible movie with out him. There is no one under this part of the world, who can pull the star value which Shankar Shanmugam wanted for Chitti or Vasee or 2.0 . The inimitability of Rajini about this movie is that he is let to evolve as how we wanted to see him on screen. Shankar transports the distant super star to us, who is an ultimatum , who is larger than life. He brings the swag, panache of Rajini in different dimensions. 2.0 is an ambitious and successful outing  to bring a marvel for the audience who never accepted any thing closer to Sci- Fi or animated characters in the native language. Shankar had to blend both his very own I, Indian formula to bring  anonymous voice threatening the city . Almost every Shankar movie starts off the same ( Leave boys, Kadhalan)

The way Shankar sees would have to  be in five  chapters of 2.0. The first 20 minutes he disrupts  the whole city, when its gets slightly over done, he introduces Chitti to give you a rehash of what is Chitti capable of . When you know Chitti’s  limitations he pulls back the string to the flashback of Pakshirajan and breathtaking 4DSRL sounds. The time Chitti  breaks he reloads 2.0 and brings the badass Robot we know in the face of Superstar. The last twenty minutes is a pure surprise element which I foresee as the cash cow for Lyca productions through merchandises. If Shankar didn’t have the acumen towards making the real business out of this 2.0 , he wouldn’t have made the last twenty minutes which steals the whole movie out from every one. That’s the pure genius marketer who hid this through out until release.

Akshay as an Ornithologist / Bird watcher turns out to be the evil guy to bring the message against usage of Cell phones. He has obtained  an immaculate level of diligence through the CG and breath taking visuals for the scenes around him. The only problem I had with 2.0 is the broken Tamil every one speaks; Even the regional minister speaks Malayalam accent. That gets in to you so easily; the other one is the poor dialogue portion. Some how the dialogue doesn’t bring the magic in you, though the Visuals speaks the majority of the movie. One point when Chitti is introduced in the TTK road fight , You feel the CG was terrible, but Shankar corrects it very quickly to bring the 3D magic.

In a raw form 2point0 is the story of a  creator ( Shankar) , protector ( Rajini) and Destroyer ( Akshay) told in five episodes. The creator travels along the movie to speak for his craft with his limited budget. He just tries to mess around the best know CGs we have seen in Hollywood movies be it transformers or I Robots. The surprise Bot is going to live and make more version in the days to come and would make millions through merchandise. When I leave the hall that’ was  the portion which was delightful and charming.

Through out the movie you would be keep telling yourself, that this isn’t the standard we have seen for the CG or Visuals. Visuals alone cant make a movie success, 2.0 also gives you the credibility of its research and the story built around it.  You cant make a master director calm for a long period, though I was poorly made for its screen play and plot, 2.0 brings the man back to the stage where he is powered. This also brings the much needed onscreen likeable admirable powerful Rajnikanth in style. All this movie can make is to put all the Indian blockbusters to Rest in Peace. That’s the brutal reality of Shankar Rajini combinations.
