The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957)

If you haven't watched this movie till, rush to your DVD shop and just feel the magic of this classic movie which is a pioneer in motion pictures.Filmed in Srilanka you would wonder the way Mighty British treated as a slaves in Japanese Colony.Initially I watched this movie in AXN where I was missing the stream.I wanted to own this DVD when I can show see I have got a beautiful classics Yes the collection with out Bridge on River Kwai is nothing according to me .
Yes to the movie..... troops of British prisoners arrives, under the leadership of Colonel Nicholson (Alec Guinness). The camp commander, Colonel Saito (Sessue Hayakawa), addresses them, informing them of his rules. He orders that all prisoners, regardless of rank, will work on the construction of a bridge over the Kwai River as part of a railroad that will link all of Burma.
Col Nicolson refers Geneva Pact which says the officers can be exempted from Manual labours.Saito fumes at Col Nicolson and he leaves Nicholson and his officers standing in the intense heat.Saito then orders the officers into a cage and Nicholson into a seperate box.
Job starts without British officers.Days pases by and Officer become so weak and Nicolson stands on his pact .Clipton,The medical officer requests to be allowed to check the officers, Saito agrees on the condition that Clipton persuade Nicholson to change his mind. But Col Nicolson does not want to deviate from Geneva Pact.
Saito is running behind on dead line in constructing the bridge ,so he releases the officers and he wants them to stick to the dead line and to honour Saitos Commitment.
Nicolson walks out Proudly out the cage (You must watch this scene !I strongly beleive this won him the oscar)
Col Nicolson nextday finds the shabby and the disorganised work on the bridge construction and he orders the fellow officers to come with a design.Three American prisoners escape from the camp and One among them is Captain Shears(WilliamHolden) who reaches Srilanka medical Hospital.A British meets Shears and he wants him to accompany with His team who are a mission to destroy the bridge ,Shears initially rejects but joins later and they head towards Kwai to destroy it.
Back camp,Nicolson and team forge towards the deadline and As the Japanese engineers had chosen a poor site, the original bridge is abandoned and construction of a whole new bridge is commenced 400 yards downriver.
Saito becomes happy for the bridge constructed in time and Camp celeberates.
British trooph with Shears reach the site with three men dying on the way.
They fix up a Bomb to ecplode when train passes the bridge.
All set for explosion.Nicolson on the way before night finds the rope of explosion and notes it before explosion.Nicolson reaches Joyce (British mission officer ) and Joyce tumbles to detonate
,Nicolson shouts for assistance and he shoots at Saito and wounded Nicolson reaches the Bomb.
Shears crawls back but gets killed before reaching Col Nicolson.
Realising the mission he says "What have I done!?!" , he reaches to the plunger and falls on it, just in time to blow up the bridge and send the train hurtling into the river.
Witnessing this Clipton,The medical officer utters the famous verses "Madness !!!! Madness!!!"

This is considered as one of the best post war movie of all time winning 7 Academy awards .
When you watch this movie you will never miss the technical rethinking which makes this movie one of the pioneers in motion picture for instance the train exploding scene.
You can watch the example of British fortitude and dignity in the face of Alec Guiness when he walks and speaks .
Dont miss it .....Its Classic and it has all ingridients of making you sit Glued.
