Dog Day Afternoon (1975)
Dogday afternoon gave Alpacino the break he needed. He looks so young and adorable in this movie,His performance in this move is rated as #4 best performance of last century.
First thing when you notice in the movie very special is the lighting strands they have used in this movie. One of the poised and stylish camera work I have seen. (My DVD print was also original print)Yellowish and anxious mix has made this movie a velocity to move. When you watch along the movie you can also feel the climate at which the movie is also shot.
The movie was released in a controversial period; Post Vietnam war and in the period when Gay culture was increasing in America. The movie has the both. Director has cleverly handled the issues for the cohorts of both.Dogday Afternoon was inspired from a real incident
A man with his two buddies robs a bank to pay for his male lover's operation; it turns into a hostage situation and a two day media circus. Finally he gets arrested when he is about to enter in to the aircraft which he demands from the Cops to escape from the hassle.
Directed by Sidney Lumert the movie mentions “A true story”not mentioning as even “Based or inspired”, this movie is a staple to a direction which shows how a disorganized men gets chocked when they carry out a high tensed missions.
But Lumert has handled so elegantly which makes you understand they are not professional robbers .Lumert has did a lots of work on his sermonize when Alpacino Sonny repeatedly reminds people he is a Vietnam veteran and also the Gay ideology has been handled in a intense manner which leaves you concentrate on the main plot rather the boughs.
If I write about this movie I should write about “Attica “ You cant stop roaring with AlPacino“Remember Attica Attica”.This is one of the strokes of Sydney Lumert to reinforce his views. We can claim Dogday afternoon as the best among his creation comparing Serpico both starring AlPacino
What is Attica by the way I had to get the help of Google and Wikipedia
The Attica Prison riots were general prison uprisings that began at the Attica CorrectionalFacility in Attica, New York, United States, on September 9, 1971. In the end, at least thirty-nine people were dead. The prisoners had demanded better living conditions, showers, education, and vocational training, as well as less censorship of their mail and visitors
Take when Sonny (Pacino) and Sal (John Cazale) first whip out their guns in the bank. Their friend can't take it and wants out. This is a great moment, and the film has them scattered about. But a scene, for another example, when Sonny talks to his 'friend' on the phone. This shows Alpacino is always Alpacino and also see why many actors back home take him as inspiration .The movie does not have any OST but has a Elton John song "Amoreena" (which first appeared on John's 1971 album Tumbleweed Connection) in the opening credits (Source :IMDB)
The movie ,actors and characters ,editing,Camera is almost a blue-print for how many other films that would come after this would take. One almost wonders what's the point of all of it, but when it makes its moments to shine, its dynamite.
