Mirugam (2007)

Mirugam was a much speculated and much criticised movie before its release for various reasons other than the main movie and I took the option to choose though I didn’t have any interest to watch this particular movie .There are two things which should be mentioned about the movie first you can not avoid comparing this with Paruthiveeran and director Sami has tried to rework getting inspired by Cult classic Paruthiveeran.Secondly I can not understand will there be any human like Ayyanar in our day to day society. Why was this movie made?It self is a big confusion. Is it for awareness or for narrating a story of a beast?.If its awareness we should be very sorry for the director ,I think the world has moved a long way from 1987 to 2007 with regard to awareness of AIDS.

Mirugam is a story about Ayyanar (New Comer Aadi)who lived notoriouslyas a protagonist during Late 80’s according to the film.He lives a life of a sandiyar who pounds his mother abuses every body and lives a life like a beast .Ayyanar does what ever he wants and he is a womanizer by all means throughout. In an crude intention to have sex with Algamma (Padmapriya ) he marries her.The journey of Ayyanar from a brutal human to AIDS struck patient and his death is Mirugam.

There are too much of goofs in this movie ,the director wanted to show it as a period film set in 1987 but he was not able to avoid Tata sumo’s standing and advertisement of Globalised Indian Brand(Art Direction By Thotta Tharani ???????).I can not accept it as a small mistake after projecting it as a movie set in 80’S near Madurai. There is no strong reason for why this Ayyanar turned out to be a beast and why he behaves as such. There is a abrupt copy cat song inspired by Ororam Puliyamaram from Paruthiveeran in terms of Picturisation and locations. No excuses ,every body were excited by Paruthiveeran but this looks irritating.

PadmaPriya performs as a breeze in the movie ,she is simply amazing for the role of Alagamma and some of the scenes she shows the indication of a matured performer especially when she picks Ayyanar from Brothel and the climax.I loved her performance for the second time after Thavamai Thavamirinthu. Ayyanar the lead role gives us the hatred and feel of his brutuality .Thats the success but it looks so brutal which can not be enjoyed even for a single moment when he is fit and ferocious.Aadi should have ambitiously taken up this project but sadly we were not able to see any performance as a Mirugam other than his knocks and punches. But second half after the disease struck man he scores well along with Padmapriya. The later half indicates the turnaround life and agony of the sickness .It was unavoidable the movie appeared as a documentary from the moment Ayyanar returns to village.

Kanja Karuppu has made a good appearance through out the movie. There is Banuchander also ,There are performances and good camera and descent back ground score but still the movie lacks proper narration and proper script writing.I would be happy if Director Sami does not direct any movie with such moods ,First with Uyir next with Mirugam.I have seen many movies which depicts such relations and traits of Human but those were handled and executed sensibly. But Sami tries every thing and lands up in a mess .Even with the movie " Uyir" and now in Mirugam. In Mirugam some of the scenes are worth to mention like the Hospital scene and the initial scene with Padmapriya and Ayyanar. but if you look at the whole package it irritates comparing the first half where there is no motive for his behaviour. There were Sandiyars around in the past in the Tamil Nadu as Sami Portrays but why Ayyanar and Alagamma knot which gets lost in the whole message about AIDS.

I wasn’t impressed by the movie but for some performances and scenes.I was totally disappointed by the way he had made the script and the reason and narration has given to Mirugam.
