Knife in the water (Polish) -(1962)

This is an oppurtunity to see how a great director started off his career in films.Knife in the water is Roman Polanski’s first film and it is one of the critically acclaimed movie in world cinema for its intense screenplay. When I started watching this movie my dad was mentioning it very easily about Roman Polanski’s works.

Knife in the water is woven around only three characters.nobody other than the three even appear in the movie and it is been constructed in a wave of silence and immaculate visuals.A wealthy couple Andrej and Krystina ( Leon Niemczyk &Jolanta Umecka) gives a lift in their Yacht to a Young hiker after they almost hit him on the road by oversight. The movie travels along with the yacht as it becomes the fourth character knowingly or unknowingly for the viewers. The cynical man shows his superior attitude and treats the young guy with slavery ,which gives the hint where the movie is directed. But when the lady roams around with the bikini all long and with the young guy showing no signs of lust I was actually thinking whether I am taking this movie in a wrong perception.A knife of the young guy becomes the turning point .After losing the knife the movie defines the path where it had to be ;on the darker side of human intentions .

We can not peek in to the characters in a much elaborate way as they show up a limited words but their attitude in each shows the glance of each character. The movie deals with superiority, power,Lust ,intentions which can not be defined this is what. The couple show a un glued chemistry which may miss out till we reach to the defining moment.

The young guy when being ordered by the old man shows no signs of frustrations and inexperience. He tries out every thing relentlessly. The yacht driving is a familiar scene for Andrej but for the young man it’s a new and a fresh experience. It was obvious to take an advantage for the Andrej. The story analyses the main theme of Super Ego at this plot. When the two characters bombard in their levels of ego.

Roman Polanski ‘s ambitious first movie deals with the psychological intentions with a woman being a silent spectator of the whole ego clash between two male. But the director shows silence is also deceptive for the character he had portrayed.Krystina had some to thing to do before her husband reaches out the Yacht.Though the movie had only three character the screenplay is tightly packed with activities and intense scenes.Filming a movie in 60’s on a Yacht can not be a easy task for a debutant, the movie shows no signs of being duplicated in a Yacht .The clear sky and the moving waters make the mood for the whole movie as it shows the characters are passing by a dull day amidst the deep intentions running around .It can show what it looks clear may not be clear which has always the sediments to be disturbed.Roman Polanski speaks on the hidden pshyco of human in a more deliberate and effective manner.

Any point of being more elaborate could have made this movie to be a big mistake for the creation .The precision with the visuals and the individual expressions have made this movie a great movie .Clearly the movie when starts would not give you what it is about to deal ,even when the movie goes by with the routine activities at the yacht can not even hint you as the behavior of each characters are radically different from our expectations. That has given the director a comfortable position to clearly show what he wanted to describe from each character.
You can not take Andrej a loser or Krystina a double edged woman or the young guy a psycho .Its all in the cards but in a random manner where each of the character take the each position at different levels of the movie.Because every human is an animal by himself. At times the animal also comes out.
