Black and White (2008)
I have a great respect for Subhash Ghai right from school days for his movie Ram Lakhan,Khal Nayak,Karz.Off late any movie of him was as impressive as he was before.There was no question of his caliber as he was regarded as one of the biggest show man of Indian cinema.His movies used to speak on the lighter side of the human relations on love and revenge with such an beauty you will not feel the repeatability and his movies are known for his larger than life presentation.Black and White is a movie with difference from Subhash Ghai.He has changed his lanes in B&W .
Black and White title can be understood when you see the movie ,intelligent title .The movie deals with the mission of a suicide bomber Numair (Anurag Sinha ) who plans to attack India gate during independence day.He meets professor Ranjan Mathur (Anil Kapoor ) who teaches urdu in a college.Numair tells every body that he is from Gujarat riot victim but he is actually from trained troop from Afghanisthan.Numair has to keep his mission in mind but he actually meets different people at chandni chowk and he gets to know the different colors of human .He manages to get the pass for August 15th event .In a tensed moment the guy realizes his dilemmatic state.
Anurag is a good find,and he is not great looking but fits the role.He is calm and delivering to the character.No Ghai’s movie is complete without Anil Kapoor.Anil Kapoor at his best,with Race he disappointed me ,but this time its thumbs up for his verstality.His words and choice of expressions are profound in this movie.There are many notable characters in the movie like Milind Gunaji and the Sufi Old man.
Subhash Ghai has to be praised and heaped with praise for choosing this plot as it’s a sensitive subject ,dealing with Religious drive.But he has handled with such a care but one point the movie can not be as racy as the subject is the screenplay has left its cinematic effects and it has maintained to stay with originality ,which I liked in particular.B&W has many sensitive scenes which is noteworthy and new to Hindi Cinema,first thing the rolling thoughts with Anurag’s mind,Koraan preachings in a Teashop by Anil kapoor and many.The song Yeah Allah was a treat which is repeatedly shown.
B& W is a quality movie which does not end with the usual filmy stuff rather it tells the mind of the suicide bomber and his way of looking at colorful life at the end.Black and white could have been better with out romance part and with some tightly packed scenes were considered.But from the show man it’s a genuine making of a good movie which I was impressed for its maturity of the subject and adopting the plot to reality.Worth watch if you don’t like Race kind of movies.
