TESIS 1996/Dir. Alejandro Amenabar/125 m/col 6.30 pm 28-Apr-08
Why is death and violence so fascinating? Is it morally correct to show violence in movies? If so, is there a limit to what we should show? That's the subject of Ángela's examination paper. She is a young student at a film school in Madrid. Together with the student Chema (who is totally obsessed with violent movies) they find a snuff movie in which a young girl is tortured and killed. Soon they discover that the girl was a former student at their school.
EL PERRO DEL HORTELANO 1996/Dir. Pitar Miro/105 m/col – 6.15 pm 29-Apr-08
A prominent 17th-century Spanish noblewoman throws social convention to the wind and pursues a romance with her low-born personal secretary in this romantic and lavish costume thriller. The trouble begins when the young Countess Diana discovers that the secretary Teodoro is engaged to one of her maids. Outraged, she manipulates her servant into falling in love with another so she can have Teodoro to herself. The attention she heaps upon Teodoro inspires the jealousy of her blue-blooded suitors who begin plotting his demise.
HABANA BLUES 2005/Dir. Benito Zambrano/115 m/col 8-00 pm 29-Apr-08
The two musicians, Ruy and Tito, (Yoel and Sanmartín) whose music is a mix of traditional Cuban music and more modern music such as rap, get a chance at an international breakthrough through a Spanish record company, but they would have to change their Cuba-themed lyrics to cater to an international audience. Ruy considers this a betrayal of his country and his art, whereas Tito recognizes the financial necessity of it. At the same time, Ruy is dealing with the fact that his children and their mother Caridad (Sierra) are leaving for the United States. Art versus commerce, nationalism versus globalism, and communism versus capitalism are some of the themes of the film.
EL BOLA 2000/Dir: Achero Marias/88 m/col 6.15 pm 30-Apr-08
El Bola, a 12 year old boy a.k.a. "Pellet" is a 12 year old boy raised in a violent and sordid environment. Embarrassed by his family life, he avoids becoming close to classmates. The arrival of a new boy at school changes his attitude towards his classmates, and friendship. The heart of the story is the change in El Bola's life, at almost all levels, after befriending this new classmate.
EL CABALLERO DON QUIJOTE 2002/Dir. Manuel Gutierrez Aragon/122 m/col 7-45 pm 30-Apr-08
Around the year 1615, Don Quixote and Sancho Panza enjoy the lives of celebrities, as the public was made well aware of their exploits thanks to the writings of De Cervantes. Now well into the twilight of his life, the eccentric nobleman gets the notion that a horde of angry Turks are about to launch a naval attack and Quixote decides it is once again time to suit up in the name of honor. As Quixote and Panza head out to meet their "foes," the anachronistic duo draws the attention and derision of their fellow countrymen. But no matter, Panza is perfectly content to let Quixote do his own thing -- even going so far as to instigate the knight's sense of daring-do, as the men head out to for what may be their final adventure together.
