Thesis ( Spanish -1996) Spanish Film festival
I was promptly present well before the inauguration of the Spanish film festival .Infact the festival started thirty minutes late and we had to wait for the movie screening as there were too much of guest to speak about the Spanish Film industry. Many of the movies which they mentioned showed promise and I expect my attendance full at the chamber hall for the three days.Lets see!!
The first movie to be screened was Thesis directed by Alejandro AmenĂ¡bar which he wrote when he was a student, came out two years before 8mm and won a stack of Goya Awards in Spain, including Best Film.8 mm is another movie which is made on Snuff movies.Angela( Ana Torrenta) film institute student finds her interest in working with Audio visual violence .She gets the assistance of her class mate Chema (Fele Martinez) who share the same interest but in a brutal way.She happens to find the video tape which her tutor watched while he had an attack. It is like he passed away because he watched it.It happens to be the video taping of a brutal murder of a university girl who disappeared month ago.Angela and Chema investigate this and suspect Bosco(Eduardo Noriega) a fellow student on this. But things turn bad for Angela and she starts doubting on Chema .End wasn’t predictable but it was too lengthy climax which had the interest of any viewer go down a bit.
The plot seemed interesting at the beginning and it had a great start even.but when it moved on it slowly faded away with some usual scenes .The snuff movie was some thing very new when the movie got released .The characters were chosen for a limited stage but every body had a long role to play which was not needed for a thriller. Angela seems to have an irresistible urge to watch violence, both real and fictional but her intelligence becomes questionable when she was not able to take a doubt on Bosco with complete confidence when he chases her during their first meeting.
Some what the director who gave Vannilla sky and author of the movie the others some how didn’t interest me with Thesis. Some how I was convinced that Thesis had a thesis about the other side of human fantasy in a cruel way.If this movie reduced some unwanted scenes between Angela and Chema and if it involved some psychological analysis this could have been a treat to watch .Though it was not a great thriller it had a ingredients of a perfectly made movie on a brutal concept.Unlike Hostel or Saw which relied mostly on bloodspills Thesis except for one scene it didn’t believe in blood .
