The white sun of the desert (Russian -1970 ) -Russian film festival

After swiping out from the company and rushing to the Russian cultural hall I was determined not to miss a even a single second of this movie.Sitting there I enjoyed a cult classic of Russian movie world.I was surprised to can the movie be made as such with a simple plot.

THE WHITE SUN OF THE DESERT is a movie which shattered many things which used to be normal. A soldier of the Red Army named Sukhov Anatoli Kuznetsov has been fighting in the Russian Civil War in Russian Asia for many years. Just as he is about to return home to his wife, Sukhov is chosen to guard and protect the 12 harem(Wives ) of a guerrilla leader Abdulla( Kakhi Kavsadze). Abdulla is wanted by the Red Army .Abdullah incidentally left his wives behind alone as it was hindering his force.Sukhov's task proves to be more difficult than he imagined.Sukhov fights against the mighty Abdullah.

The movie had the perfect and rare blend of all parts of emotions. The comedy was certainly different were you can not laugh it out in the first sense. Some of the characters speak apart from their dialogues they deliver. The character Sayed when you see it for the first time appears to be a little cranky then he looks like a mob, then as a friend and finally as a savior. It is easy for me to say this in a sentence ,but for the director Vladimir Motyl shaping these characters would have been a real task.

On the outset the story looks so weak that’s because there is no heroic activity in a action movie .The movie was even refused by legendary Andrei Tarkovsky when offered for directing .But it had been taken as a challenge and it looks as a classic when you see it after thirty years.I read from Wikipedia that this movie is is part of traditional space rituals among Cosmonauts. It has lot to speak about the power and duty which Soviet Russia was claiming among the nations in those period.Every word of the movie means many things for example the famous the oneliner “The East is a delicate matter” which do not eastern countries but it was meant to be confusing.

The movie begins with Sukhov longing to return back to his wife and thinking about her all the time in the deserts.Amidst some beautiful and soulful songs the movie lashes out the culture of the Harem in not revealing their faces to strangers.Anatoli Kuznetsov resembles Alec Guiness and his role also as his.

For many reasons the movie is a different one ,it does not unpredictable but there are strange way things done in the movie. The romance ,the husband –Wife relationship even the war are a bit of cranky but sure a remarkable piece of screenplay. Thanks for Russian film festival for this movie.
