The french connection II (1975)

I apologize for the inactive blogging for the past two weeks,I have no reasons for not blogging this time.I made up my mind to watch new movies but my expectation to new Rajini Movie is making me to wait for the show. There are no releases for the week went by which deserves a write up.

The sequel of French connection released four years after the classic first part.Popeye Doyle (Gene Hackman)travels down to Marseille to find his man Alain Charnier(Fernando Rey )who made him run till the end in Newyork.Marsiles is Alain’s town and Doyle faces all sorts of impediments and barriers to complete his mission .Allain ruins and puts Doyle drugged ,and when he recovers he takes revenge with his vague memory about the places.

First I don’t see a need for a sequel for the first part.Secondly both the movies stand at different class . John Frankenheimer directed French Connection II and there are differences in his making compared to Billy Friedkin's directing of the original film. The chases , visuals ,nonsense attitude of Doyle and intelligent Allain made the first part a classic.Second part gives a one mans stand who is drugged and then revived and then taking the revenge. It solely puts forth Doyle as a wounded victim. The director has build on Doyle character. He has developed his character to give a different view of what we had known as Doyle from first part.

Photography, lighting, set decoration has to be mentioned here. Most part of the movie is handled insets and it gives a controllable task for the technicians to handle it and they had shown it .The restrictions from the first part was it was all shot in out door. Each performance speaks in this movie. . French actor Bernard Fresson as Barthelmy gives a memorable performance as Doyle’s counterpart.I was not able to understand many of the conversation as there were no subtitles for the French dialogues.

Gene Hackman’s performance gives a evolution from the first part.He is confused and entangled in the new city and its evident till the moment he recovered. This movie belongs to his performance as a drug ruined patient and the way he over comes it.He runs for the Frenchman and he gives a strong climax both to him and the viewers.

This movie gave me a feeling that it was not a sequel. It sounded silly for me but even the movie made me feel.I have seen many sequels but this one had a strong impact of a different from the original. Its classy and stylish above all its different cop story which pays attention to their behaviours and attitudes.
