The Merchant of Four Seasons (1972)- German



When I started watching this movie I was presuming that its going to be a kind of travel story .I don’t have an idea on what basis I thought about as such.But it was totally opposite about a man how he slogs in his life and how he strains to live.
Merchants of four seasons is about a movie which speaks of self compassion and love .When the guy Hens Epp( Hans Hirschmuller )returns home after a military stint he is not being received with warmth by his Mom.That defines the whole movie.I had no idea why he was treated as such in the beginning.He is terminated from Police force because of lust with an woman.He marries and sells fruits but he is being humiliated for he being shorter than his wife.He is been bombarded with the incidents which happen around him ,which is completely created by him.He has no body to blame or pity.Its him who has created the loneliness which he doesn’t want to.His wife leaves him and he is put in to enormous amount of pain by the depressive act with in himself.

Its about depression and pain a man can get by his actions and his realisation.There is a movie in Tamil” Veyil “ which speaks completely on a loosing side of a man.This movie speaks on the same lines how a man can be completely depressed right from his younger days.Its not a feel good movie which I can recommend but it’s a movie with reality and noteworthy performance.It doesn’t slip from the way of what it intends to convey even in a single moment.


Rainer Werner Fassbinder; the cult German director who sucided in the 80’s has directed this movie .Its one among his very few creations where he speaks about this man in a very unpleasant and emotional manner.He balances the movie from not getting in to a melodramatic story by putting across some incidents which can make realise what a man’s life can be after so much of losses.


He thinks about his lost love at times and reaches her but returns back depressed coz of his state of being.The Man shows his disparity in all aspects and he rests for a moment when his friend comes to assist and he realises his loneliness with in himself and anticipates his mood of disparity and ends himself.The movie is not a sentimental but a deeply movie and tells how a human soul can be demoralised by his actions and the things around him.I would recommend if you really love to watch a classic in a style different from a present day movie.

There used to be days when I used to watch a movie twice, thrice or even five times in a theatre. Every one growing up watching Rajini, Kamal would definitely agree; Aboorva sagotharargal, Batsha, Kadhalukku mariyathai or many to name it.  It may be completely not possible today with the schedule and the amount of new content which streams before you. Some movies bring nostalgic moments when they are telecasted today. For example, I usually have it with Bombay, I remember watching it atleast 30-40 times in theatres in and around Tirunelveli. I have rehashed some of Tamil movies which is available in Youtube today which you should watch it again.  These were some of the movies which gave huge inspirations to film makers, script writers or be it any one loves cinema like me. Test it , first 15 minutes of any these movies and I bet you will sure complete the whole movie. With Silambattam Simbu needs a hit badly and he does what he knows the best.Dance and Action. Silambattam is a out and out Tamil Masala movie shot in a village atmosphere.Incidentally the Tamil cinema is able to break the Friday lucky day to release this movie on Thursday. Anantha Thandavam -The original Pirivom Sandhippom

Below is the write up about a movie which I expect so much for this year.The story has been my personal favorite and is based on one of the best Tamil novel which I have read so far.I happened to read the novel Pirivom Santhippom during my college days ,which made me to think aloud about love.Written by Sujatha the story was initially published in Anantha Vikatan in early 80’s.The story of Pirivom Santhippom is of two series first in Tirunelveli second part in America.After eight years I am able to recall each and every characters of the work.This has nothing to do with my memory but with the beauty of the book.The main characters are “Ragupathi and Madumitha “.After reading the book I felt there can not be a sweeter name than Madumitha .Even the name of the particular character while reading the novel will make you feel for Ragupathy.
