Welcome to Sajjanpur (2008) * * * *

Legends remain Legends .Shyam Benagal is one of the legendary movie makers of Indian Cinema and at this age he has created such a beautifully crafted movie which will remain as one more feather to his crown.Welcome to Sajjanpur will be remembered for its factor of freshness and versatility for the years to come.Yet another stunning movie from Bollywood.

It’s the story how a Letter writer Mahadev ( Sherayas Talpade ) of a village Sajjanpur to a Novelist Sukhdev. He writes letters and posts for the villagers where he meets different emotions and different stories which is directly or indirectly involved. He falls in Love with Kamla(Amrita Rao) his school day buddy .She writes letter to her husband who is in Mumbai and has not turned for four years.

Kamla is not only the character which is dealt in detail.Every character in the village has some thing to say.May it the Munni Rani who is a eunuch or Compounder (Ravi Kishan) or the Ila Arun every body carries different stories which reaches Mahadev.Every character has fun with in themselves which transforms in to the screen magic ,the happenings around them makes Mahadev enjoy his destiny .Stories and the characters are not a make fun characters for sure, they are serious and they carry different social messages with in them.Ila Arun for superstition ,Compounder for Widow marriage,Eunuch who contests in the election.Shyam Benegal has seen to that nothing is shown as a preaching here but he had made that it reaches to the viewers in a very lighter way. There are many poignant moment in the movie which is spread across and it never gets overloaded for us.

The man who steals the show is Shreyas Talpade. He has been the find in the recent years and he has improved as a very matured and natural actor .He carries the characters with involvement and empathy which makes him a very enjoyable to watch.Mahadev as a character is not a very clean and genuine guy at least for the matter of Kamala when he fakes letter to her husband which turns against his plan.Still he is a innocent ,Charming ,educated human who lives around the village .Every body believes him and he never takes advantage of them too.We even feel the closeness of the character while watching him on screen. Its such a lovely performance from the young man.

When you just sum up you can never think that it was like a movie it was a compilation of characters in a natural manner minus your usual cinema stuff.Every things happens like the way we have seen in our daily life and what we had seen in our childhood days. Thanks to Shyam Bengal for making such a phenomenal movie .I had some some problems in understanding the rural Hindi ,but was able to get in track when the movie went on.I would say its Four out of five for this for welcoming to Sajjanpur.
