Lovestory (1970)

I have read this book Love story Eric Seagel when I was a college student and people were giving me such a over hyped reviews on that.Infact I loved that book for its movement and its purity of love. When I saw this DVD I wasn’t very sure whether it could bring me the magic of the book .Thats the reason this DVD was lying for months unviewes.Friend of mine tagged me to watch this untouched DVD.

Love story is a typical Boy meets girl kind of love story with a tragic end .Millionaire Guy Oliver Barett (Ryan O Niel) meets Downtown girl Jeniffer Cavelliri(Ali Mc Graw)and he falls in love with her.It takes them a verbal argument about themselves to know what they have in themselves for each other.Oliver marries Jeniffer after leaving his Dad Barett. They live happily like before but sudden tragedy of Jeniffer puts every thing to hault.

This is a story which shows the love at its different form.Director Arthur Hiller had taken pains to recreate the work of Eric Seagel. It grabs our attention more than the book. The best thing about this is the cast of Oliver and Jeniffer. As Jeniffer points out in a scene that she is not good looking and the way she defends it shows why this pair is together for not a reason but Love .Lovestory takes a simple and well narrated way of screenplay. It doesn’t try any thing very melodramatic as in the romance movies but it plays the harmony with the words.Every argument and the conversation between the pair makes you feel they are so much in love .

The way it ends also puts up a sorrow to every body who enjoys this love .Love story is a strong film for the performances.Oliver doesn’t want his dads image ,he wants Jeniffer,he is not a very gentle and very sweet guy whom we see as lover. But definitely he is a guy who handles his love so matured.Jeniffer also doesn’t expose her love so easily but she stays with him for what he is .Their Verbal Volleyball continues after marriage also as their unique bond between eachother.By the time you are in to the movie you feel very hard to imagine the way this movie has tried many things in a normal love story. The marriage and the way Oliver takes Jeni to his parents, the way he pretends to forget the way of his home is such a revelation for its period.

The dialogues of Lovestory are mostly from the Book but its not a easy to create a background for this.I read that Eric Seagel first wrote the screen play and they adopted it to a novel which became a best seller of all time. Its not easy to bring out the societal imbalances and the love struggling in the midst of it in a easier way thirty years ago.The oscar winning music of this movie is a classic for years to come also.We have seen many movies of this Genre ,many regional movies still adopt the same formula but Lovestory remains as the pioneer of it kind.
