Poo (2008)

Don’t surprise me with these kind of movies. After a month long holiday to movies I experienced a good and poetic movie in Tamil.First and foremost thing about this movie is that you need to forget the pace and style which the movie goes on.Its a new avenue what Director Sasi had looked at and I loved for the many things.Poo is a poetry and you need to read it to understand and enjoy ,because its made with a style so close to reality.

Poo is inspired by Tamilselvan’s short story Veyilodu poi .Its about a young woman Mari (Parvathy )who loves her Thangarasu(Srikanth) from her childhood. Its about how dreams of three persons confront each other for a man and its about the love which lives and struggles with in a woman for a man .We are shown with Mari living happily with her husband in the initial scenes and rushing to her native place to see her Thangarasu ,We don’t have any clue what this Mari is made of ! Is it innocence, cranky, mad in love or dignified love ?Slowly we get to realise this woman with the level of depth and purity she had on Thangarasu and the sacrificial attitude for her love.

Poo is about Mari and we cant take the eyes off from Parvathy who had played Mariamma .I haven’t seen such a very impressive ,expressive female character in the recent past. She could sweep many awards for this movie. Her actions and expressions were poignant and poetic. One scene when she tells “ Naan en Thangarasukku seira ellame azhagu thaan (What ever I do for my Thangarasu is beautiful )“ is one such particular scene which shows she is a different performer.I need comments about this particular scene which drops before the interval from the readers who had watched the movie earlier.

Poo marks with strong performances .There are many characters which builds this movie and makes the fragrance for the title.Srikanth should be applauded for choosing this brief appearance but his style of acting doesn’t fit to the location.Penakarar in the movie and the Mari’s mother character are the two roles which are impressive and very expressive almost through out the movie.

Sasi has chosen Rajapalayam locality for this movie as the original story also happens there. The movie revolves around the villages near Rajapalayam I could see the culture so evident in the characters ,The life around the Sivakasi Match factory is such a impressive portrayal which should be applauded.Sasi had made just four films in thirteen years and he is giving impressive movies every time though I am not a big fan of Rojakootam .Tamil literature is a bank of stories and Tamil cinema had almost forgotten it.Its good to see Sasi bringing back the glory of the Tamil literature in celluloid. The movie ends in a poetic note and there are lots of emotionally moving scenes which makes this a fine presentation.A genuine presentation is evidently visible from the director to bring the story in a form of good cinema.Camera of P.G .Muthaih brings the gusty Rajapalayam in a typical form.

What is lacking in the movie is the reason of Mari’s love on Thangarasu who doesn’t even care about her for many years till he realises. There is no reason for her love though it starts from childhood. The movie moves with slow pace in some phases but that is understandable with the theme.Movie has many ordinary scenes like the tea shop humour and College scenes which could have been avoided strictly.Sasi should have reduced the length of the movie but still Poo is poetic and as I give thumbs up for the quality of performance and direction .Poo is refreshing and graceful .
Rating : *** 1/2
