Silambattam (2008)

With Silambattam Simbu needs a hit badly and he does what he knows the best.Dance and Action.Silambattam is a out and out Tamil Masala movie shot in a village atmosphere.Incidentally the Tamil cinema is able to break the Friday lucky day to release this movie on Thursday.

Silambattam is the same old Family revenge story. Vichu (Simbu) is an innocent temple priest who is brought up by his grandfather (Nedumudi Venu) as a coward. in a village. His grandfather hides him from knowing the past.He comes to know about his father Tamilarasan who was Killed twenty years ago in a family riot by a young boy Thuraisingh.Prabu who is the brother of Tamil finds Vichu and Vichu turns as Tamil and takes revenge.

First and foremost of this movie that this movie can win is because of Music and some versatile choreography ,Yuvan and Simbu combination has worked again and this time it’s a youth package with some great variety of dancing from Simbu.Simbu has displayed his maturity in acting I would thoroughly accept. He had left his punch dialogues away and he had struck to his maverick Village young man .

Prabu has a good role to play in this movie with some action scenes.Sneha’s role was a short lived character. There were many characters in the movie but it was all along Silambarasan and his actions. Dorai Singam (Kishore) the local MLA who is a hooligan, wants to take procession of villagers land for building a beer factory.Every body expects more from this actor after pollathavan but he fails miserably in this movie. It was a very normal Villain who dies in the end.

Silambattam works on a formula with songs,Sentiment, action and humour. Its a custom made movie for Simbu. But the scenes in the temple were ridiculous drive of humour with double meaning and atrocious comedy of Santhanam. It reduces the pace of the movie .The movie picks up when Vichu meets Prabu.

Another best thing about this movie is the meticulous camera work of Saravanan. We hardly watch the camera in a masala movie but this camera man showed difference in stunt scenes. The action scene in the river when Vichu meets Prabu is one such example and also the train scenes with Sneha are shot with beautiful visuals .Silambattam is a package of variety rice which can give you satisfaction if you don’t expect any thing great or different. It was a long drive though and its far from being impressive but Silambattam survives with Simbu’s energy and good music.
