Evana Bala.....!!! (Is he Bala....!)

Image
Getting Chows by thriving, Reciting some tale on routine Haunted by thoughts, Snagging around the populace I had reached the silver tresses. Did you sense I go squandered? after ensuing a petrifying mood Like droll lives? This is a poem by Subramaniya Bharathiyar (In my best possible English ). I happened to read the book " Evan thaan Bala " which was published in Anantha Vikatan .I had read that in non habitual basis ,which had let me not to capture the jinx in a proper way. This book starts and ends with this poem, which shows how he is silencing his critics and the society around him. Seven years ago I happen to read a article written by Ilayaraja in Anantha vikatan which was about a movie which he had recently composed and he had also mentioned that the movie is going to take entire Tamil cinema by a wave .I had the belief when such a Genius commenting on it .He was speaking about Sethu .Rest is known to every one . Now I wanted to know what this man is ? -Why is ...

Pride(2007)

Image
Some times you get impressed by a mediocre movie when you feel the need for self motivation. One point of time in your life when you would be let down by things,You fight to regain the past pride .You certainly got to have the determination .The movie is all about regaining the Pride of a community through determination.Jim Ellis(Terrence Howard) is a swimmer and he is dropped from the champions meet because of he belongs to a particular community.Ten years later Jim is sent to Philadelphia by City officials to vaccate Philadelphia Department of Recreation. He comes across the teens in the local area ,The former Swimmer Jim Ellis starts a swim team for troubled teens at the Philadelphia Department of Recreation to make them participate in Inter meets. They were dropped as Jim was dropped. The movie ends how Philadelphia Department Recreation wins and earns its pride by winning the meet. Terence Howards lifts the movie with his tiring view and honesty. He gives the charisma to the movi...

Hamburger Hill(1987)

Image
This movie is my first experience in watching a Vietnam War movie. To understand the emotions of Vietnam movie we need to be a part .But that doesn’t rake up the whole movie. To a degree the war is viewed as a cold war between US,its allied groups on one side and Soviet union ,North vietnam on the other side.So there was a natural feeling with the soldiers to argu why they are there .Tha movie brings at various stages the conflict involved clashes between small units patrolling the mountains and jungles, amphibious operations, guerrilla attacks on the villages, and cities .The story tells the mission of the 14 US soldiers including young in experienced soldiers to capture Hamburger hill which is with North Vietnamese and Chinese soldiers. On the outset the movie goes with lots of conversation and emotional outburst. The film is a bleak prompt of what it was for young men to live and die in Vietnam which had nothing but political reasons for U.S.A.The film uses some brave scenes in point...

Can Chak De India recreate the Magic ??

Image
Indian Cinema Industry has not seen many good sports movies apart from Lagaan or Iqbal .But those movies were on Cricket and its easier to inject the spirit of cricket in to our blood. There was Bend it like Beckham, It didnot have the originality of Indian Movie though directed and acted by Indians. From the moment I saw the trailer of Chak de India ,I don't know I felt there is some spirit in the movie. For a very simple reason. This is made on Indian National Game "Hockey "which we often dont accept unofficially.Chak de India's trailer was fascinating and equally inspiring .Produced by Yash raj Films and Directed by Shimit Amin(Man who directed Ab tak Chappan ) this movie stars Sharukh Khan as Kabir Khan the coach of Indian women's hockey team. This is a story of a hockey player who returns to the game as a coach of a women's hockey team.He inspires and motivates them for one dream"WorldCup". Hockey is one game which had created magic in Indian sports....

Pulp Fiction (1994)

Image
Movie making is an art and I thoroughly believe its not only a form of business. Skills and out of the box thinking makes any movie noteable. We don’t come across movies with non linear plots and charismatic film making so often. You can not watch these movies with such a casual outlook.Quentin Tarantino is a director who makes movies with such a sort of non linearity in story and cinematography. Like his other movies this movie is made in chapters with non sequential order. Highly stylish this movie has all from Strange sex, Drugs, Wine ,Dine, Action, Comedy, Robbery but expertised in a different style. The story has six chapters and each has a interrelated incidents. One shows the experiences of two hit-men Vincent Vega& Jules Winnfield (John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson). Other shows Travolta’s date with Mia (UmaThurman), at the request of his Marsellas Wallace (Ving Rhames) gangster boss. And the third shows a boxer Butch Coolidge (Bruce Willis), who has been paid off by Travo...

Paruthiveeran why is it celeberated ?- Not a review

Image
I was wondering before the release of Paruthiveeran how is this movie going to be..When I saw the trailer I didn't like the way Surya publicising the movie . Karthik -Surya's brother was not at all impressive to me.I liked Mounam pesiyathe movie very much for the character of Gautham (Surya). Most guys would pretend to be like that Gautham . Ameer had handled both Gautham and Kannan ( Nandha ) characters very well.I was surprised why did he sign Karthik and Priyamani .I never realised that its going to be such a meticulous presentation. But when I saw the movie,I was taken back .This movie was completely different. It is a definite imprint in Tamil cinema in many ways. This is one legendary example to show Director is the boss of any movie. Paruthiveeran's success is not because of screenplay but because of the mood of the movie.Today when I was travelling for a Sales meeting I went across the Posters showing 155 days .There is no Cell phones ,TV,Cars in the movie (TV...

Kreedam(2007)

Image
I went for this movie with a open mind, not expecting any thing though I had some biased comments from my friends.Kreedam should have been a Kreedam in Ajith's stardom if some lapses were not there.I am impressed with the attempt Ajith took to give a new dimension. It really had worked for him in many of the scenes.Kreedam directed by Debutant Vijay has arrived in a time slot with Ajith's career needing some thing to prove before his big release Billa 2007.Ajith can have a smile in his face.Atleast this time naturally!!!. Kreedam is not a pathbreaking story .Its same old Vilain and Hero fierce chase and battles. But there is one dream of a father which gets shattered amidst the battle.Raja Rajan(Rajkiran) wants his son (Shaktivel)Ajith to be a Police officer but he finally ends up murdering Villain for saving his family. Debutant Vijay had the gift of talented artists for his party like camera -Thiru,Music GV Prakash,Lyrics-Muthukumar,Ajith ,Trisha,Raajkiran,Vivek...what else a d...

Serpico (1973)

Image
Till I watched this movie I was thinking unlike our cops American cops are real poised and honest cops. I have seen many Tamil movies of one man standing against the corruption .There have been a stereotypes invariably in all the movie which stands against corruption. End of the day in our real life we go with the system what so ever the movie preaches .But we all would have felt the frustration of being in the corrupted system on different heights. More you get frustrated the tougher for you to survive in the system. Serpico is based on the true story of New York City policeman Frank Serpico . Serpico (Al Pacino) a honest police man gets frustrated with the corruption in Police department. He gets transferred over and over. Serpico begins to appeal to his bosses about the corruption, but gets ended in vain. Finally he blows the whistle against the whole system at the famous Knaps commission and quits the police department.Sydney Lumet has made the casting crew with some Hard Leg...

Life is Beautiful(1997)

Image
All along these days I was never aware I was missing such a beautiful movie. Its very rare to see a movie coming out with some beautiful emotions and humour in a holocaust. This movie is more about love, humour and human emotions but the stage is holocaust .When you feel happy after a movie that's the success of any movie.Life is beautiful brings out the joy in you in the first half and the true emotions with laughter in the second half.We usually see holocaust movies in pain, survival and enmity .But humour is something which will the the last in their cards.Director and Lead actor Roberto Beningni should have enjoyed his life to make a movie like this. The challenge of Benigni's work is that it binds two diametrically opposed subjects in a balanced and entertaining way. His tale of a 'love that was meant to be' is told engagingly and whimsically in the first part of the movie. The second part set in holocaust describes the beautiful love and sacrifice with a humour . ...

The Worst of Blockbuster Tamil movies -A recent past Analysis

I was traveling to Bangalore yesterday and I happened to watch Ghajini movie on the way.All along since I watched the movie I watched and I was impressed by portrayal of Asin Character .I never noticed the other things in the movie. Now after two years I am able to find what the movie fooled around.I was shocked of the background score and logical followups in the movie of how it ignored the main plot.It was a super hit movie. The Short term memory loss was used for a promo purpose and I can say the director did not take any conscious effort to show it other than Surya's clean shave head. What a jarring music..... .In addition to it Some of the recent past analysis of what are worse in movies which have become superhits. 1.Worst performances by majority of roles : Gemini 2.Worst background score : Ghajini 3.Worst Comedy sequence :Gemini, Amarkalam ,Villain 4.Worst direction :Gemini, Thullovadho ilamai 5.Worst movie ignoring the base plot : Ghajini 6.Worst screenplay :Jeans, Siv...

Good Fellas(1989)

Image
To be very frank I was not aware of Martin Scrosese's way of film making till I watched Departed.May be that was the period when I started watching movie very vigorously.I had watched Casino,Gangs of Newyork ,Aviator previously but I was unaware that it was Martin Scorsese works. Good fellas is a regarded as one of the greatest movie of all time by Time and BBC.I wanted to poke my interest what made it as such. This is one of the greatest movie in means of story narration,Performance and Cinematagrophy .It was concluded in the 80's by directors that if you want to make a great movie make a mafia movie. It abides by the above rule but still needs some kind of different view to look at this movie. The movie is not about the Don who makes things work ,its like our Sathya ( Chakravarthy ) in the movie Sathya , Chandu ( Vivek Oberoi ) in Company a working Mafia. The movie is about Henry Hil (Ray Liatto ) and his associated Mafia .He joins Paulie's (Local Cabs stand owner who com...

The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

Image
I had watched Hannibal the sequel of this movie before watching this movie in 2002 .At that moment i had no idea why this crazy doctor had been portrayed as such eating human brains. Silence of the lambs is a physcological thriller based on the novel by Thomas Harris. Clarice Starling, a young FBI trainee, is sent to see the imprisoned Lecter in order to ask his expert advice on catching a serial killer given the name Buffalo Bill, who kidnaps women and skins them. The oneline of the story may be very simple but the character Hannibal Necter horrifies you .But you will not miss to enjoy the dynamic interplay between Foster and Hopkins – the real treat of this film. There is one difference aboutDr. Hannibal and our day to day Film villains ,He is extremely intelligent ,piercingly sharp and he is unpleasantly mesmerising .When you look at his he makes you think doubly what he says!!!He is such a complicted man who can not be taken as a dinner companion .Coz he will fry your tongue as his ...

Apocalypto(2006)

Image
The movie starts by quoting this "A great civilization is not conquered from without until it has destroyed itself from within.—W. Durant If you want to see a MelGibson's shear piece of love in versatile film making then Apocalypto is an evident and treat for your eyes. But it fails in explaining it and the presentation. The Life of Mayan and the pre Colombian culture are very interesting in many ways .The movie rides on the Mayan Culture . Apocalypto begins with a hunt by villagers(Not Mayans) in the outskirts .The movie uses Mayan language for conversation .The villagers innocent frolicking comes to an end when the evil Mayans capture them and take them to a Mayan city. From here onwards the blood thirst , sadistic massacres and mass rapes continue to drag the movie .Our hero is Jaguar Paw who lets his pregnant wife and kid inside a deep tunnel to save them from the raiders. He escapes from the Mayans .The Mayans chase him ,He succeeds in saving the life of his wife ,Kid an...

Rashomon (1950)

Image
{I was proud when I saw Tamil movie “ Virumandi ”for the story telling ,I comeback proud saying hey my star is the best in the world ,My father let me down come on kid Virumandi is inspired from 1955 classic Antha Naal .Arguments closed.} In English vocabulary there is a term called Rashomon effect which was coined after this movie. This movie Written and Directed by Akira Kurosawa brought Japanese movies and legendry Akira Kurosawa to Western audience. The Rashomon effect is the effect of the subjectivity of perception on recollection, by which observers of an event are able to produce substantially different but equally plausible accounts of it. (Source :Encyclopedia.com) The above description tells you the story. The film is made in a unusual narrative style which gives the impossibility of obtaining the truth from witnesses of Murder and a rape. There is a flashback, flashback with in the flashback .But the beautiful part of it is you never feel confused where you are! The ...

Mohamul(1994)

Image
Okay ...This is the toughest task. Writing a review for a movie which is your personal favourite. I had two minds whether to write or not. Thanks to Sivaram (My Brother) &Sabari. This is also tough because you don’t have any information about the movie in the web-Imdb is blank Wikipedia is blank. I had to watch this movie again to write a article on this. To me by far the movie which has affected me in all aspects is Mohamull. Many of my friends would agree on this. Let me take a ride on how it p(r)icked me .Mohamull means the thorn of Infatuation or lingering Lust .The movie deals with the disturbance, distraction and magnificent obsession leading from a desired goal or consummate artistry(Source: Tamil blogs .com). The movie is about a Youth Babu’s(Abishek) infatuation for Yamunaa(Archana Joglekar) who is ten years older than him .The story revolves around in Kumbakonam. Babu is a gifted of Carnatic singer who is groomed by Ranganna (Nedumudi Venu) who is a renowned carnatic singer...

No Piracy but .....!(Article)

Image
When I was discussing with my friend he gave me a valid question "How are you watching these movie to write about it ?"I answered through DVD.He asked me Legal or Pirated ! I said legal .I wanted to make my point very clear to him.We can not stop piracy ,its been in our system in many ways.A legal DVD of a Tamil movie would cost Rs.299-499 which is costlier if I want to own many DVDs.An English /Hind/Foriegn movies would also be in the same range .But we cant resist watching movies ,I made up my mind long before not to watch any tamil movies in pirated DVDs which I get for Rs 50.It affects the business in some means. But as far as Foreign movies(Which are not released in theaters in my reach -I am editing after Sabaris comments) are concerned I am not spoiling or against any body's business.I get it from my local DVD shop (Strictly legal) or from my friends shop which are not legal.I bet Cinema Paradiso or Shawshank redemption will not release in any indian theatre now and...

The Pianist(2002)

Image
When I watched this movie I was stunned the way it had engulfed the lives and emotions of Jews in Poland. When I went through the web I found the film had a personal connection for director Roman Polanski, as he had himself escaped from the Krakow Ghetto as a child, and had lost his parents there. One greatest thing of this movie differing from other similar movies was it never made the viewers to sit and admire or adore only the Pianist skills. The director was very sure The hero is a great pianist and he never wanted to waste any clips to get claps for Adrian Broody. To be very precise its very difficult to have the command on the character when your roll is passive and when you are running for life. But Broody had done it with the character Wladyslaw Szpilman. This movie won him the Academy award including the two other Oscars for Director and adapted screen play. Movie is about how a Jewish Pianist living in Warsaw ,Poland during IInd world war survives from Nazi forces till Russians ...

Goal (2005)

Image
Many sports movies which I have seen right from Rocky to Bend it like Beckham ,There has been some sort of stereo typing and scheming in all the movies. We have to agree that. Hero always wins in the final and This movie is no exception . You always feel good after watching those kinds of movies ,I love this Probably because of the Game!!!Football .Its really magic and astounding to see the real English stadium pitch and tone. This movie is all about how a Mexican born American Guy who loves football enters in to English Club Newcastle united, proves his skill and Becomes over night star. Santiago Munez (Kuno Becker). When you watch this movie you will love this guy and his name .So do the cast in the movie.Real Spaniard with square jaws and boyish look Santiago Munez is awesome in this character. I had bought Goal I and Goal II from my DVD shop and I started watching this movie at 11.30 pm of Saturday .It was about 1.45 when I completed the first part I was not able to control myself t...

Dog Day Afternoon (1975)

Image
If you Love AlPacino you cant miss this Classic Bank robbery.None of my friends beleived that this movie is the biggest hit of Alpacino. We all thought Scarface ,Godfather was his biggest hit.Scarface was a classic Gangster movie but it did not farewell beacuse of repetetive image positioning of Gangster Alpacino. Dogday afternoon gave Alpacino the break he needed. He looks so young and adorable in this movie,His performance in this move is rated as #4 best performance of last century. First thing when you notice in the movie very special is the lighting strands they have used in this movie. One of the poised and stylish camera work I have seen. (My DVD print was also original print)Yellowish and anxious mix has made this movie a velocity to move. When you watch along the movie you can also feel the climate at which the movie is also shot. The movie was released in a controversial period; Post Vietnam war and in the period when Gay culture was increasing in America. The movie has the both....

Shawshank Redemption (1994)

Image
By far when I chat with any of friends or others about English movies ,the obvious question I get is Have you seen "Shawshank Redemption"? I am getting many comments and I have had many grape vine discussions about this and I realise why this is still a great movie to watch.I dontwant to write a review about this movie. One thing for sure for this movie in particular, viewers take different characters as their inspiration.Even relate different characters with them selves. Read from Wikipedia :This movie did not fair well when it was released because of fierce hit from Forrest Gump,Pulpfiction. But the home DVD segment has brought this movie to this level and still a favourite of many viewers.Lets see this movie in a different angle Redemption refers to In religion:Redemption (religious), a concept referring to forgiveness or absolution for past sins and protection from eternal damnation In Christianity, salvation through the payment of a formal obligation by the death of Jesus C...
